14THE SYDENHAM RIVER CANOE RACE

Since 1974, the SCRCA has organized one of the greatest sporting events in the area: the Sydenham River Canoe Race.

In 2002, more than 70 canoes and kayaks took part in the race, which runs from the bridge at Shiloh Line to the Shetland Conservation Area. There are 9 levels of difficulty, ranging from the 19km Expert Class to the 8km Beginner Class. The 8km race goes downstream, but the 19km race runs back and forth along the river, making it much more difficult. The average canoeist finishes the 8km race in just under an hour.
