10WORLD WAR TWO AND THE HOME FRONT

The idea of a Home Front took hold in Canada for the first time during World War Two. This concept stated that everyone in Canada, not only the soldiers overseas, fought in the war. Every aspect of Canadian life, whether it was industry, agriculture, or home life was seen as a battle. There were three major areas of the Home Front that people along the Sydenham River took part in: Industry, Agriculture and Community Groups.

Industry

The government contracted most of the major industries to produce supplies for the War. In Strathroy, the Woolen Mills produced blankets for the troops and in 1943, the government bought 95% of the Mills’ blankets. Somerville Ltd., which had produced shipping tubes before the war, began making shells.
